Decimus Software

Join us for our new adventures

Change is coming to Decimus. Big new things are coming down the pipe, and with them come opportunities for new colleagues and friends.

We're a company of the modern age; people work from home and we collaborate across the Internet. The resulting flexible hours and no commute are a huge win for your quality of life. (Make sure that you're disciplined enough to work this way…not everybody is, and that's OK, but it's obviously critical here at Decimus.)

Working with an indie developer like Decimus means that you have enormous influence over your work. Any significant decisions usually go for a lap around the virtual office for feedback and discussion. Even if your job description is answering support emails, you'll likely also help decide the pricing structure or marketing plan for a new product or weigh in on an architectural decision.

So if you're smart, skilled, reliable, dedicated, and a hard worker, check out these positions and apply! Email us with whatever we need to see to understand how awesome you are.

Support/QA Human (part time)

This is the classic software entry level position, with a successful indie Mac developer. Great part time job as is, and also a good foot in the door that could lead to a development position later if one opens up.

Responsibilities:

  • Front line user email support; reply to basic questions, and verify and reproduce reported issues
  • Assist with product testing, both in maintaining automated test systems and in manually testing products
  • Act as the "Avatar of Correctness" throughout the development and release process

Requirements:

  • Absolutely must be reliable and self-motivating, and able to work under limited supervision
  • Experienced Mac user with broad system knowledge, particularly in networking and filesystems
  • Excellent personal skills, friendly, and able to talk down upset users and not take things too personally
  • Excellent (English) professional writing ability; excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar. For example, you must never be confused about whether to use an apostrophe.
  • A knack for breaking things in reproducible ways

Pluses:

  • Located in or around Portland, ME (including Boston, MA)
  • Familiarity with C, Objective-C, and Cocoa
  • Scripting skills (e.g. Ruby, Python, PHP, etc.)
  • Multilingual (including computer terms)
  • Existing user of Decimus products

Project Director

Aspiring indie Mac developer? How would you like to be an instant success, without the annoying (and highly risky) period of having to build a product from scratch and grow a userbase over years? And wouldn't it be nice to be able to be able to focus on just making an awesome product, without having to deal with all of the administrivia like accounting and dealing with the government?

With some new projects I'm starting, I'm getting stretched too thin to be able to give every project the attention each deserves. I need somebody able to take over the day-to-day development and design on some projects. You'll also play a prominent part in overall project direction and major design choices, and will likely operate increasingly independently over time on that front.

Compensation will be heavily tied into profit sharing on the products you manage, so if you do a great job and the products flourish under your care, your compensation will likewise flourish. The intent is that this position, with its flexibility and control, be much like being an indie business owner, including the potential for financial reward if successful.

Requirements:

  • Absolutely must be reliable and self-motivating, and able to work under minimal supervision
  • Must have completed and shipped a Mac application currently available to the public, even if just a freeware/hobby project
  • Strong Objective-C and Mac Cocoa (not just iOS) development skills and technologies
  • Good understanding of usability and interaction design issues
  • Familiarity with network and file manipulation programming

Pluses:

  • Located in or around Portland, ME (including Boston, MA)
  • iOS skills/experience
  • Web development skills/experience
  • Server administration skills/experience
  • Existing user of Decimus products
