vs. Time Machine

• Time Machine simply doesn't do bootable backups, which we think is the best backup solution for most users
• Time Machine is really restricted in what it can work with: it has to be an attached HFS+ volume, or a manufactured-by-Apple Time Capsule. With Synk, you can use almost anything to do your backups.
• While Time Machine does its one thing well, it's really restricted in its feature set, so for anybody with needs beyond the basics, Synk is a great solution.

vs. Online Services

• Privacy and Security: If you can see it on a website, it's a simple breakin or corrupt sysadmin away from being in the hands of bad guys. And centralized services like that are much, much more attractive targets for attacks than any individual user. (A single intrusion at the centralized service will net sensitive data for thousands and thousands of users at once!)
• Performance: Synchronizing your desktop with your laptop 3 feet away via a data center in Utah is grossly inefficient. This is particularly true on any large files, as you'll be limited by the (often quite slow) upload speed on your internet connection.
• Subscription Fees: You get to pay monthly, forever, if you want to keep your data, and if you don't pay, your data goes away. We don't feel the need to force you to pay us a rental fee for overpriced storage just to use our software; pay us for the awesome software we provide, and you can use it forever with no further cost, and if you want online storage, you can get it at wholesale prices and save a lot of money.
